- An investment of approximately €1 million to transform the three existing basins into new tree-lined green areas, increase shaded spaces, and improve accessibility and usability.
- The project includes rainwater harvesting for irrigation and a reduction in the management costs currently associated with the existing basins.
Noventa Padovana, 12 September 2026 – Bringing the principles of climate adaptation into a public space used by the community every day. This is the goal of the Piazza Europa redevelopment project, promoted by the Municipal Administration and developed by City Green Light in collaboration with Barbin Impianti S.r.l. and Molon Graziano S.r.l. The project officially gets underway today in Noventa Padovana with the laying of the foundation stone.
The project, designed by City Green Light and Treviso-based Studio Cinque A S.r.l., represents an investment of approximately €1 million and will reshape the square by transforming the three existing large water basins into new landscaped green areas with trees and shrubs, prioritising native, low-maintenance species.
The project therefore combines measures focused on green spaces, shading, water management and accessibility, with the aim of making the square more comfortable and better suited to the community’s needs, even during the warmer months.
More Green Space and Shade for Climate Adaptation
Increasing tree cover is one of the key elements of the redevelopment project. The new planting will complement the existing trees in the square, creating additional shaded areas in the spaces currently most exposed to the sun.
The project therefore contributes to climate change adaptation by enhancing an existing public space to improve comfort and usability during periods of higher temperatures. The new layout will also integrate green areas with spaces for rest and social interaction, while preserving Piazza Europa’s role as a central hub of community life.
From Managing Water Basins to More Efficient Resource Use
The transformation of the square also involves a more efficient use of resources. The three existing water basins currently cost approximately €20,000 per year in water supply and system maintenance, in addition to more than €10,000 per year in energy costs for operating the water features. Decommissioning the basins will therefore eliminate the costs currently associated with them and their systems. The project also includes rainwater harvesting to irrigate the new green areas, with the aim of reducing the use of potable water.
A New Layout to Improve Accessibility and Usability
The conversion of the three water basins will be accompanied by a redesign of the spaces and pedestrian routes. The rectangular western basin will be transformed into a green area featuring a long linear bench, while a new staircase will address the existing difference in level. The central area will be enlarged, surrounded by seating and made accessible via two ramps located to the north and south. The eastern basin will also be converted into a green area.
To improve the continuity of pedestrian routes, the former channel alongside the eastern section of the square will be closed and covered with new paving, creating a more seamless connection within the area. The project also includes approximately 120 metres of custom-made linear benches, seating integrated around the existing trees, and new sculptural steel play equipment for children.
Flexible paving solutions will allow areas to remain available for events and community activities. The aim is to create a square where greenery, shade, pedestrian routes, seating and social interaction can coexist within a more accessible and flexible layout.
Urban Regeneration Designed for the Long Term
The selection of native, low-maintenance plant species and the decommissioning of the systems associated with the water basins are part of an approach designed to reduce maintenance requirements over time. The project therefore addresses both the quality of the urban environment and the way the area is used and managed, bringing together climate adaptation, urban greenery, efficient resource use and usability.
“With the laying of the foundation stone, we are launching a project that goes beyond the redevelopment of a square. It is about how a central public space can respond to the needs of our community and to a changing climate,” said Marcello Bano, Mayor of Noventa Padovana. “Piazza Europa will become greener and more shaded, providing a welcoming space for children and community activities and encouraging shared use of the square. At the same time, the conversion of the water basins will help reduce water consumption and the costs associated with operating and maintaining the systems. It is an investment in the future of a public space that we want to make more comfortable for children, older people and people with disabilities.” .”
«“The redevelopment of Piazza Europa is an important part of a broader project that we are carrying out together with the Municipality of Noventa Padovana, with the aim of taking an integrated approach to improving the quality of urban spaces, energy efficiency and the city’s ability to respond to the challenges of climate change. The overall investment of approximately €1.65 million enables us to act on several fronts, from modernising public lighting and regenerating one of the community’s central spaces to introducing new smart solutions. With Piazza Europa, we are focusing in particular on climate adaptation, through more greenery, increased shading and more efficient use of resources. This is a long-term project that translates into a tangible public space our vision of a city that is more accessible and attentive to people’s well-being.” ,” said Tomaso Naldi, Business Unit Director Northern Italy at City Green Light.
