- No excavation needed. Solar power preserves the hillside landscape and reduces energy costs
- The project by City Green Light and Signify lights up hillside areas without electrical connections for the first time
- Zero light pollution for starry skies and respect for local Wildlife
Vicenza, September 2024 – City Green Light and Signify bring the sun to Ventimiglia with 60 streetlights fully powered by solar energy. This project, strongly supported by the Minicipal Administration in response to citizens’ requests, has successfully brought lighting to hillside areas previously without electrical connections and thus plunged into darkness. All while fully respecting the natural ecosystem. Currently 40 steetlights have been installed but by the end of the project, the number will increase by an additional 20 units. The Vicenza-based ESCo, Italy’s leading private lighting operator, is installing the lamps in the hilly areas surrounding the Ligurian town.
Thanks to the study conducted by City Green Light and Signify, this initiative brings clear benefits to citizens, enhancing road safety while having a minimal impact on the surrounding natural environment. This is not only because the installed devices are powered by solar energy, but also because the project was carried out in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed by the Vicenza-based ESCo with the Italian Union of Amateur Astronomers. The goal is to preserve the visibility of the starry sky by minimizing light pollution to the bare minimum. The use of solar-powered lighting fixtures, both day and night, helps maintain the integrity of the hillside landscape by eliminating the need for underground excavations to install electrical connections.
The installed Philips SunStay fixtures feature a die-cast aluminium body, ensuring long-lasting durability and excellent heat dissipation. They also provide efficiency and ease of management and maintenance thanks to the integrated charge controller, self-diagnostic function with led indicators for battery charge and depletion and Bluetooth interface. This allows connection via a mobile app to monitor the status of the fixtures and set customized dimming profiles.
“This is yet another sign of our Municipal Administration’s commitment to the suburban areas. We promised it and we delivered: in the municipal budget, we allocated a specific fund for the maintenance of suburbs and localities. In addition to resurfacing roads that hadn’t been touched for decades, we decided to enhance and optimize public lighting as part of our programmatic mandate, introducing solar-powered streetlights in areas that have Always lacked them. This is a substantial initial intervention, with many more to follow and I would like to thank City Green Light and Signify for their contribution” stated the Mayor of Ventimiglia, On. Flavio di Muro, alongside the Public Works and Suburbs Councillor, Domenico Calimera.
“Sustainable lighting for a complex territory: this is the challenge we tackled in Ventimiglia, in collaboration with Signify. Together, we illuminated hillside areas that were previuosly in darkness, overcoming the obstacle of lack of an electrical grid. This project demonstrates that embracing renewable energy is not only a crucial step toward European targets but also a tangible solution to enhance the quality of life for local communities. It embodies a sustainability that balances environmental well-being with the safety of its residents. It reaffirms how public-private collaboration is a key element for sustainable and virtuous territorial development” stated Tomaso Naldi, Business Unit Director Northern Italy at City Green Light.
“We are truly pleased with this partership with City Green Light. Thanks to these interventions, the Municipality of Ventimiglia now benefits from street lighting with zero energy consumption in several previously unlit areas that posed various challenges. The lack of an electrical grid immediately guided our choice towards the innovative all-in-one Philips SunStay fixtures, powered entirely by solar energy. For Signify, it is a crucial that solutions like these, with focus on renewable energy sources, are prioritized by local authorities. It is from them that the drive towards a more sustainable future must begin” commented Andrea Bernardini, Commercial Leader of the Public Sector at Signify Italy.
