Genoa, June 20, 2024 – With the inauguration of Piazza San Marcellino, City Green Light has completed the installations for Lighting for Genoa. This project, strongly supported by the Genoa city administration, uses light design elements as a tool for urban regeneration. It is the first of its kind in Italy.
Conceived and coordinated by Condiviso.coop of Genoa, with the creative direction of lighting designer Stefania Toro, the Lighting for Genoa project has involved 9 squares in the historic center with an artistic path made of lights. This not only offers a tourist attraction but also improves the livability of urban spaces, making them more beautiful and habitable and increasing the perception of safety through permanent lighting elements.
The installations, all with low energy consumption, were created by the Vicenza based ESCo City Green Light, which will also be responsible for their routine maintenance over time.
Each square was assigned to a different italian lighting designer, part of the Women in Lighting Italy network led by Giorgia Brusemini.
The last to be completed, Piazza San Marcellino, in the ghetto district between Via del Campo and Via Gramsci, features a project by Simona Cosentino. Here, colored lights softened by thin beams of white light to enhance visibility and safety, make the entrances to the square evocative. The various colors, symbolizing diversity, converge on the church square to form white, symbolizing unity and rebirth. Glimmers of light appear on the facades of some buildings, reminiscent of the natural reflections from the church roof on sunny days.
Curator Stefania Toro emphasizes “The intention is to bring these places to light, providing citizens with a new perspective and making Genoa an innovative city that experiments with permanent lighting design interventions. We built the project with the citizens, the key players who oversee the area daily. They were the first curious onlookers, eager to have a point of focus and the first to take care of the installations. This human aspect of the project allowed us to create a nighttime narrative of the squares with light – a new, sustainable light that make urban spaces more human-friendly for everyone who deserves to feel welcomed and safe in the city“.
“With this last installation – says councilor for maintenance and historic centers Mauro Avvenente – our historic center is further enriched with a precious form of artistic lighting that will enhance the peculiarities of our narrow streets and squares. It is a positive result, both artistically and in terms of the revitalization of some areas and the increased perception of safety“.
“We have completed a virtuous path, and once again, for Piazza San Marcellino, the entire lighting system has been realized with low energy consumption, thus combining important aspects suach as art and sustainability” adds Environment Councilor Matteo Campora.
